The Essential Oil Diffuser Difference: When to use which diffusers and why.

I continue to be astonished at how many new things I learn every year about using and diffusing essential oils. The big difference when hearing people discuss the oils is how many years of experience they have had with them.

Testing has now shown that the higher up the diffuser is places, the better it is dispersed in the room.

Clinical Diffusers

I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of getting to know Julie Chertow, Inventor of the Aromadome. Here you can listen to my interview with her last July.

I had a spat with pneumonia last winter, and she helped lead me to a blend recipe to diffuse in the Aromadome. The Aromadome is a carefully designed tent and diffuser set that for therapeutic application of top-grade oils. Although it’s typically not recommended to blend pre-blended oils, this exception is because of the synergistic compounds found in these blends.

1.5 ml of Thieves

1.5 ml of Raven

3 drops of clove

3 drops of peppermint

It took 1, 45-minute session, 5 min on, 5 min off for me to feel the difference, and with consistent use, I am free of any lung infection. The diffuser I use in it is the Aroma Whisper, which is an Atomizing Diffuser with a long tube for proper placement in the Aromadome.

Atomizing diffusers

An atomizing diffuser disperses essential oils as fine molecular vapor throughout the air so they can be absorbed gently into the body through limbic and the respiratory system. The aroma released by the essential oil atomizer can prompt the nervous system to transmit signals to the limbic system in the brain – the same part of the brain that houses emotion and memory. The brain may respond by initiating various physiological functions, such as a release of hormones, relief from pain, or a positive boost in mood.

Atomizing diffusers do not use water and therefore should have a timed output and rest settings so that the diffuser is outputting for about 20 minutes per hour.

Vaporizing Diffusers

Many of the fancier looking diffusers on the market don’t require the motor of an atomizing diffuser because they use water and ultrasonic stimulation for dispersing a fine mist.

The water vapor tends to carry the essential oil molecule further in the atmosphere.

The result is humidifying and can especially benefit dryer environments.

I only use distilled water in these types of diffusers. Distilled water is ‘unwritten’ and will greatly decrease risk of contamination from chemicals used in treated tap or bottled water.

Pro Tip: I recommend to put these up high in the corner of the room for best reach. Leaving them on all night next to your bed can add excess water to the respiratory system.

NOTE: Water vaporizing type of should not be used to treat lung or mold issues.
